Brains: The Mind as Matter
From 3,000-year-old trepanned skulls and ancient Egyptian mummified brains to slices of Einstein's brain and science fiction's imagined genius brains in jars, the Wellcome Collection's latest exhibition is full of extraordinary artefacts and stories. Ancient, often gruesome, tools of surgery sit beside beautiful works of art, such as the first Renaissance sketches of the brain as the seat of consciousness, while the latest 3D imaging techniques play alongside modern video installations. A book and programme of events will accompany the exhibition.

OXFORD
The English Prize: The Capture of the Westmorland, an Episode of
the Grand Tour

The capture of the Westmorland, an armed merchant ship, in 1779 resulted in the hijacking of an incredible and significant store of Grand Tour treasures bound for England. Now, after two decades of research, the spoils have been brought back together, to a certain extent, to give a snapshot of this cargo of maps, books, antiquities, watercolours, busts... and cheese, that belonged to some of the most prestigious Georgian tourists.
The Ashmolean Museum +44 (0) 1865 278 002 (www.ashmolean.org). From 17 May to 27 August.
