Children of the Plumed Serpent:
The Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico

This visually impressive display tells the story of how a group of city states in southern Mexico resisted both Aztec and Spanish subjugation and went on developing their own culture and society amidst the upheaval around them. The ruling class considered themselves descended from the human incarnation of the Plumed Serpent; here their story is told through frescoes, ceramics, gold artefacts textiles and more.

Cleopatra: The Search for the last Queen of Egypt
This impressive exhibition brings together the largest collection of Cleopatra-related artefacts ever to visit America. More than 150 objects, including monumental statues, jewellery and coins, tell the story of the underwater excavation of the famous Egyptian queen's palace off Alexandria. This is the only West Coast venue for this touring exhibition. Mysteries of Egypt, with Omar Sharif, will be screened in the IMAX cinema to coincide.

Aphrodite and the Gods of Love
Having impressed the crowds in Boston, and proved a big hit on Valentine's Day, this exhibition can now be seen at the Getty Villa.Through over 150 items from antiquity, many on special loan from Rome and Naples, discover the many sides to this famous goddess and her acolytes.

Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan
Following six years of research conducted by the Center for the Art of East Asia at the University of Chicago, this exhibition tries to reconstruct the majesty of this devotional site. Sadly plundered in the early 20th century, the extant and retrieved objects as well as the caves themselves have been digitally scanned to allow a vision of how the site once was to be built up. The gallery juxtaposes 14 objects from Xiangtangshan with contemporary video installations.

Ancient Chinese Bronze Mirrors from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection
On show for the very first time, almost 90 mirrors from a private collection reflect Chinese culture and art over 3,000 years. The earliest examples are from the Qijia culture, with the latest dating to the Jin Dynasty of the 13th century AD. Special attention is given to the changing use of material over time, as well as the decoration, which frequently includes script, deities, mythical figures, zodiac signs and geometric patterns.

Sacred Gold: Pre-Hispanic Art
of Colombia

On loan from the Museo del Oro of Bogotá, Colombia, over 200 gold artefacts and figures celebrate 2,000 years of pre-Columbian culture and art from the coastal societies of Columbia. The "golden people" spawned the myth of El Dorado, the City of Gold, and left behind a wealth of exquisitely rendered works of art, which can be seen here.

NEW YORK, New York
Nomads and Networks: The Ancient Art and Culture of Kazakhstan

Significant in being the first major American exhibition to look at the nomadic cultures from the Altai and Tianshan regions. Over 250 objects, dating from 800 BC to 100 BC, have been loaned by the major museums of Kazakhstan. These include decorated human and animal figures, petroglyphs, tooled bronze and gold prestige items.
